Resolution not just for 2014: Closet Building

For the bulk of my 20’s my shopping mantra was defined simply by “retail therapy”.  These two little words were all I needed to give myself permission and justify splurging on major purchases to also scoring on every amazing deal I seen online even though I had 4 other pairs of black heels.  Seriously, how many black heels does one girl truly need (and for the record 8 is one too many, and yes I’m guilty of having too many).

I’ve decided that I would start with the newness of 2014 and implement the following new shopping rules that will help me to not only carefully edit my closet but make it more meaningful and allow it to be a closet that in 10, 20, 30 years from now it will not just be a closet but a collection that tells the Edgy, Comfy, Chic tale of my style.

CSM’s new rules for shopping:

1.  Embrace the motto: “Buy LESS, Buy BETTER”.
2.  Don’t purchase in the  moment.  Take at least 24hours to think about the purchase and see if you actually can envision yourself with that amazing piece.  9 times out of 10 you will see that it would have been an impulse purchase which immediately leads to buyer’s remorse and naturally clutter in your closet.
3.  Never buy anything you like, only buy things you love.  Which in turn means you should never buy anything that is almost amazing but only buy something that is absolutely amazing.  If you have an issue with even one little thing, walk away and don’t buy it.
4.  The first place to shop should always be your wardrobe.
5.  Have a one in, one out rule.  Decide on a maximum number, and stick to it.  If you love something enough to want to let it in, be ready to decide who has outstayed it’s welcome and should make their exit out of your closet.
6.  Help turn any clutter into a collection by organizing your closet by category.  So, work shoes next to work shoes, evening dresses next to evening dresses etc.

Be sure to check back everyday this week to see the rest of my “Resolutions not just for 2014”.  After all, what’s the good to keep these fashion/style/life resolutions all to myself when we can all work on them together right?
