July: Ruby!

Happy Birthday to all of you Cancers & Leos born in the month of July!  July’s birthstone is the ruby gemstone.  It has been said that the Ruby’s red glow comes from an internal flame that cannot be extinguished, making a gift of this stone symbolic of everlasting love.  So, who else loves you more than anyone else in the world?  Now that was clearly a trick question, because duh we all love ourselves more than anyone else ever can (well, not that we would ever admit to anyone else but it’s okay because your secret is safe with me wink, wink).

So start the year long celebration of your birth now and check out the following envy inducing pieces I’ve picked out to help you do it in style!

Rinse, Spin & Tie-Dye

Tie Dye

  • Who’s the Designer:  Burberry Prorsum, Fausto Puglisi, and Michael Kors (pictured L to R)
  • What’s the inspiration:  With the 45th anniversary of the epic musical festival, Woodstock it’s no wonder that this technique is having another major fashion high this season.
  • Why it’s relevant:  While this technique is not a new innovation the approach and how designers are reinventing the use definitely is.  The high fashion crowd such as Burberry Prorsum, Fausto Puglisi and Michael Kors all offered new and unique ways to refresh our notion of tie-dye.  With their Resort 2015 collections this technique shakes the psychedelic swirls and hippie dippy concoctions for a sophisticated rinse and spin approach.
  • Where to wear it:  Everywhere! Embrace your inner festival-goer self and give it a high fashion approach with some tie-dye and dip-dyes.  The key to this trend on how to not look like the president of The Grateful Dead fan club is to wear this in unexpected silhouettes like wide leg high-waisted trousers or a moto inspired jacket to juxtapose the edgy leather trim.

Splurge vs. Save: Your New Summer Layering Go To!

White will forever be a key color for summer so why not keep it fresh, crisp and new right?  This summer is all about the white out whether it be in a LWD or well constructed and structured blazer.   Because temps are rising and for the simple fact that it’s so not a cute look to be sweating up beads of perspiration due to the long sleeves of a blazer.   While I’m a total Stan for fashion & style I’m a bigger fan of functionality so my secret?  Keep the same clean, fresh and modern tailoring look by opting for a white long vest.  The key to picking the right white long vest is length.  The longer the better, so don’t be afraid to go long or go home.  Next, the silhouette you should be after falls along the same vein of giving a nod to the menswear trend so opt for a more loose, boxy boyfriend fit.

Now, the more important question: Splurge vs. Save?

6 Hair Tricks to Get Through Summer!

hair braidAs of this past weekend it is officially Summer ya’ll!  This is hands down my favorite time of year for hair because the weather forces me to get more creative with my hairstyles out of sheer practicality (having long, thick, curly black hair that has an aversion to getting frizzy and unmanageable is the perfect combination to kick start anyone into hair creativity, am I right?).

Summer is all about being outside enjoying the beautiful warm weather while sipping cocktails at the pool or jammin’ out to your favorite DJ or band at a music festival.   For a long time I use to let my hair dictate what outdoor activities I’d participate in because of the haunting vision of a big frizz ball on top of my head.  Over the years I’ve picked up few tips and now I’m spreading the wealth because no one should have to experience what I call FBR (Frizz Ball Rachetness).  Check out my tips and give them a whirl and be sure to tell me which one became your absolute must because lord knows these have all come in handy in so many ways!

1.  Get rid of static with one amazing tool: A dryer sheet!  With one sheet, smooth it over your entire head going from root to ends.  To avoid getting static altogether, rub the dryer sheets on your brushes and combs before using them on your hair.

2.  Wild & unruly baby hairs? Spray a toothbrush with strong hold hairspray and comb down the baby hairs and this method works extremely well with taming cowlicks too.

3.  Best trick to avoid chlorine hair? Pre-soak your  hair and ensure that you drench it with spray on conditioner.  This will ensure that when you are in the pool your hair will soak up the chlorine free water and conditioner and not the pool water.

4.  Frizz your biggest problem?  Reduce frizz by drying your hair with cotton tee instead of a towel.  Towels can cause a lot of friction which disrupts the hair cuticle and in turn will frizz.  You should then follow up with blow drying it on a cool setting.  Drying on a cool setting keeps the cuticle closed which will prevent frizzing.  Heat opens up the cuticle which means FBR.

5.  Natural Summer highlights?  Don’t waste your money at the salon, instead squeeze an entire lemon into a dish, dip clean toothbrush into the juice, and gently comb it through your hair.  Sit in the sun for 45 minutes-don’t forget to put on some SPF because why have highlights if your skin becomes leathery.  Repeat as necessary to achieve the highlight color you want to achieve.

6.  A clean scalp is a healthy scalp! Keep your scalp clean from all of the oil and product build up that can clog your scalp by cleaning your hair & scalp by mixing baking soda in water to create a paste that you use to wash your hair.  Then rinse out your baking soda paste with a solution of 2 parts water and 1 part apple cider vinegar.  Yes it smells fun, but your hair will feel so fresh and so clean!

Australian Indigenous Fashion Week

Board 1

  • Who is AIFW (Australian Indigenous Fashion Week)?: AIFW is a fresh and exciting new event that aims to showcase and support the design talents of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders from across Australia.
  • What’s the inspiration: As the fashion industry yearns for authenticity, AIFW answers the call by introducing to the fashion world a new unique and fresh perspective.  AIFW is set to be a permanent fixture during the Australian fashion calendar and will focus on showcasing a diverse range of traditional & contemporary designs from emerging designers as well as notable industry names.

Indigenous Fashion Week Board 3

  • Why it’s relevant:  With the industry craving authenticity there is definitely no better source that ensures an abundant amount of fresh and creative energy than with the Aboriginal & Pasifika Fashion industry.  The ability to have such an international platform such as Australian Fashion Week is so important in launching this much needed voice.  I don’t know about you but after a few seasons at the tents and seeing essentially the same points of view being showcased this is just as refreshing as a tall glass of Lindemans wine at the end of really long day.  Stay dialed in to when the next Australian Indigenous Fashion Week at their home page here.

Juun.J: Street Tailoring

Juun.J Board

  • Who’s the Designer:  Juun.J is the brilliant mind behind self titled menswear fashion label, Juun.J
  • What’s the inspiration:  Juun is largely inspired by youth and street culture and has in turn aptly calls this “Street Tailoring”.  As an expert who is regarded as a master tailor he draws on this training to deconstruct and dissect traditional and old world notions of classic tailoring to formulate new and modern silhouettes.
  • Why it’s relevant:  His avant design and classicism coupled with his precise tailoring will no doubt continue to be a tour de force in the evolution of menswear.  Juun’s designs challenge our preconceived notions of what is traditional menswear.  His blurred approach allow for a revolutionary approach to clothing and ultimately is designing for the chic streetstyle dresser who is unafraid of pushing the style boundary.
  • Where to wear it:  This is a public service announcement: This is only for the bold, the daring and those who have “I don’t give a fuck!” attitudes of the world.  This collection is not for the faint of heart of the fashion lemings who follow trends rather than make them.  Do not approach this label if you are not ready… don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Splurge vs. Save: Because Dads Are Trendy…

Father’s Day is around the corner (no literally, it’s in a matter of days).  Finding the right gift for that amazing guy in your life can be a struggle.  Granted, my experience may be unique but I have a feeling that it’s not.  While my father is definitely what you would call you a “Man’s Man” he is a “Man’s Man” who appreciates clean lines and a dapper look.  Because I know my father I know sprinkles of trends to update his style are the perfect little gifts.  One great trend for spring/summer is the update to the flat sandal.  Although Tevas and Birkenstocks are having a moment, the ideal sprinkle for this trend update for my dapper dad is a clean, sleek, leather sandal update.

So the question of the day is, Splurge vs. Save?

UK’s new print “It” girl, Lisa King

  • Who’s the Designer:  Lisa King London by Lisa King
  • What’s the inspiration:  In King’s own words, “Print is so personal.  Not everyone is going to like every print, but you might like the idea it came from and you might wear it in a different way”.  This personal and meticulous approach to print design where King first takes a deep dive into the study of specific topics that range from a very mixed cultural bag of influence is what makes her prints so special.  She almost takes a rigorous academic approach to analyzing and dissecting each topic of influence that will become the topics of her collection.  In her debut Fall/Winter 2014 collection, ‘A Study of Stars’, she translates her interpretations of astrology, film ratings, literature, and mathematics.  Each print was rendered in a stunningly bold palette through art techniques  such as line drawing, painting, collage work and digital manipulation.

  • Why it’s relevant:  As a convert to the printastic influence of print and a strong believer that prints have segued their influence to being a staple in a sense that print is the new black.
  • Where to wear it:  Wear these stunning pieces as a statement topper to polish any ensemble or make it the focal point.  If scarves define you life like many I know, this is an absolute must add fashion accessory to your abundant collection.  Up the ante of your current collection here:  http://lisakinglondon.com/

Hood By Air by Shayne Oliver

Hood by Air

  • Who’s the Designer:  Shayne Oliver for Hood by Air
  • What’s the inspiration:  The driving inspiration behind the design aesthetic for HBA is the way that Oliver is speaking a different fashion dialect than anyone else on the runways.  Yes, Rick Owens presented a collection where models were real women that performed a step show.  But what Oliver has done far surpasses and even rivals that of Owen’s genius in that his fashion dialect centers around elevating street wear into fashion, rather than only using it as inspiration.
  • Why it’s relevant:  Shayne Oliver’s out of the box approach to giving a voice to streetwear as a legitimate fashion style is revolutionary.  His thoughtful approach in his usage of fabrics and trims to still preserve the essence of the streets while marrying it beautifully through carefully crafted technique is brilliant.
  • Where to wear it:  Take a nod from a few of Oliver’s  most loyal patrons like Riri and Kanye West and wear it everywhere and anywhere.  This collection and HBA pieces in general are not for the faint of heart so if you can’t wear these pieces with the best of them then it’s best you leave it to a pro and not get hurt in the mean time. (But seriously, don’t sell yourself short before you try it! I have faith in you)
